Mentors, The Essential Ingredient

I have been involved in Therapy for over 30 years; in practice, teaching and in learning.. When I look back over the years and wonder how I managed to grow and develop as a therapist, I see that apart from training, time, experience and study, I see clearly that mentors played an essential role in my development. At key moments important men and women appeared into my life to represent for me key qualities needed to become an effective therapist, I pay tribute to all of those individuals without whose help I would have journeyed in the dark with a bag full of dry information and only my own internal representations for company.

Each in turn and in their own way they represented varying qualities which I think were essential for me to become effective as a therapist. Each of those qualities an ingredient in my unique recipe of growing into the healer I am today. As therapists in the making I think each of our recipes may be similar but are as individual as our personalities, backgrounds, intellect, interests and abilities.

Confidence, Charisma, Congruence Competence, Calmness, Communication, Emotionality, Stability, wisdom, caring, tough love, gentleness, firmness; the list is endless; so much to live up to and thankfully many lifetimes to learn and develop.

I think what makes each individual recipe work are time, persistence, dedication and openness to learn from others. We cannot become experienced without experience so we begin today and know that we mustn’t be fooled into thinking that becoming a healer cannot happen overnight because we read a book or did a weekend workshop or we have had an attunement. Of course the books and the workshops and the attunements empower our practice in varying ways, so we must keep learning and developing and never stop and our mentors are essential and indispensable because they show us aspects of our true potential. What we value, admire, look up to and are in awe of in those people are reflections of who we are inside. Our willingness to allow these figures to flow through our orbit means that we are willing to become who we might be, our true potential as healers and light workers.
